Day 37 - Manhattan, NY

Happy 4th of July!

It is not quite 7am and I am kicking back in a lawn chair in the middle of the street in Time Square. Since Memorial Day, portions of Broadway have been closed to traffic and scattered with lawn chairs. Very cool! I am absolutely loving the pulse of New York City! A guy sits down next to me and announces that he is Elvis. He tells me that he will fill his backpack with tips today, and then have to somehow safely ride his bike through Brooklyn with all that cash (since the banks are closed). My next hour is filled with one fascinating “New York” conversation after another! The funniest is the flamboyant public safety officer reminding the “sleeping” 85-year old man near me to keep the brown chairs segregated from the green ones. A little later I get my keepsake photo of the Naked Cowboy (who was slightly more impressive last time I saw him – “naked” in the freezing snow).

Since we’re all exhausted, instead of sightseeing, we stumble through the subway to get back to the trailer for a quiet day.

We fail miserably to watch a fabulous Macys fireworks show over the Hudson River. Originally the plan had been to watch them launched here at Liberty Park. However the lady who runs the RV park said we wouldn’t be able to see them from here, and gave us a map of where to go. She was dead wrong. We were surrounded with thousands of (disappointed) people and a postcard view of the city – but our view of the fireworks that went off on both sides of us (one being back at the trailer) was completely blocked by buildings. They sure did sound impressive though.
