Today we had to drive 6 ½ hours across the state of South Dakota. Although we managed to pass up Corn Palace, we couldn’t resist a stop at Wall Drug for some good roadside kitsch – and spent an hour catching up on some souvenir shopping. We were by no means alone … you would not believe the amount of people who stop here!
We are staying 3 nights at the Palmer Gulch KOA, practically right around the corner from Mount Rushmore. The place is a mega-city! There is a lodge, cabins, kamping kabins, and 500 campsites crammed into a meadow. It is a kids' paradise with a waterslide, splash pad, pools, mini golf, playgrounds, even horseback riding and much more! You wouldn’t stay here for tranquility - that is for sure!
Having been here before, we reserved a spot in the outside loop where there is a tiny bit more breathing room. (You pay an additional fee to request a site.) Greg was not at all happy that we were instead given a site with a pad smaller than our trailer, and right across from the bathhouse. It maybe does have a bit more traffic, but I like that the site is huge and backs up to a creek. It might just be one of the best sites here (considering the options)! And if it doesn’t work for us, then we can leave.
