Day 15 - Santa Rosa Beach, FL

Folsom5 has arrived! It seems only fitting for Greg to author this entry - since we've made it to his destination - however, he is off gallivanting with the Outbackers!

We got an early start this morning, and stopped for 2 1/2 hours in Mobile, AL at the USS Alabama battleship and USS Drum submarine. Both served during WWII. The kids, particularly the boys, came alive on the vessels. It was like a real-life Call of Duty game! They loved sitting at the double-A battery guns on the ship, and crawling through the tight quarters of the sub. And now they're particularly fond of their souvenir -a 30 caliber round attached to a necklace.

It didn't seem like much of a drive to our destination, though we skimmed the tips of 3 states: Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

For the next 5 nights we are staying at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park Gregory E. Moore RV Resort (now that is a mouthful). You won't find any vacancies here at this lavish beach-front resort! The campground is fully paved with concrete patios, green lawns, and trees between sites.

After briefly setting up camp, and meeting a couple Outbackers, the kids and I ventured to the beach. Even though the campground is beach-front property, with a private beach stretching for 5 miles towards Destin, it is actually a mile from our site. The resort offers a tram, but the popular mode of transportation here is bikes. We scootered.

The kids' reaction to seeing the Gulf Coast for the first time was like they had never seen a beach before! They stared in amazement at the fine, white sand. Christopher couldn't stop running his hands through it. When wet, it seems similar to the kid toy called "moon sand". Jeremy b-lined it to the water and instantly discovered how warm it is! He was dying to go in but his loose shorts wouldn't hold up. Kate frolicked in the sand and water. And even though the sun was beginning its descent, there wasn't a bug in the sky! Perhaps we've found paradise!

Stay-tuned for pictures...I need to either find Wi-Fi or figure out how to upload some from the phone.

  3. You must have come thru (or close to) our home for several months when we were first married--the infamous Naval Training Command in Pensacola.

Unfortunately, we never had much free time to enjoy it white sand and warm water, and there was hot weather, high humidity, and bugs larger than lions, but we did enjoy our time there somewhat.
