Day 9 – Remember the Alamo

For a long time I’ve wanted to experience San Antonio, so to actually be here is a neat (not huge, just neat) realization. It’s a beautiful morning – it’s hard to believe we’re within 5 miles of downtown San Antonio! It is so peaceful here as the sun is rolling up. The singing birds and chattering squirrels are enjoying it with me. We’re at the end row of this huge KOA – occupying a pecan tree grove, I believe – and all I can see is a dip down to a creek, and then a wall of lush green trees. How can Greg say we’ll never move to Texas? I know the answer to that … it’s supposed to be 98° today!

“It’s small,” said Jeremy when we see the Alamo for the 1st time. Santa Anna made a similar comment after his victory over the Texans – “This is just a small affair.” Of course the importance of a battle is not measured by its size. Those were some brave men, completely out-numbered, yet so convicted to fight for their freedom, liberty, and independence! It was pretty cool to be there and stand in the same room that protected the 14 women and children who survived! The kids were esp. interested in the weapons.

Next we went on a “Jungle Cruise-like” boat tour of the River Walk (complete with similar Disney sense of humor). It was the perfect way to see the area.

Instead of eating lunch directly on the River Walk, we ate right above it at Schilo’s Delicatessen. Quite tasty reubens and patty melts. Jeremy esp. liked their home-made rootbeer, “this is so g-o-o-d!” He polished off a pitcher by himself.

The last thing we did downtown was try to appease Jeremy’s desire to shop the mall for a pair of pants. Yes, despite the soaring temps, all he cares about is finding another pair of pants to wear! Deflated that he can't find what he's looking for, he disgruntingly compares his need to find another mall to our efforts to find another Ford dealer!

The day ended with more swimming and cards. And the sharp contrast tonight … our peaceful, lush forest of trees has turned into some sort of night club (obviously on the other side of it), and we’re falling asleep listening to its loud music!

  1. I guess that city is great. Earl was there fifty years ago when he was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston for medical training and he loved it then. That was before the fancy riverwalk. He did have his picture taken at just about the same spot you did. As for living in Texas, no thanks. When Erin & Mike moved back from there she made him promise they would never live in Texas again. ln
